and the Old World Deli. In a
town where Boston scrod and
other seafood specialties
abound, here was a casual
eatery with a menu that in-
cluded corned beef, bagels
and old-fashioned seltzer.
From the wharf, it wasn't
far to Lafayette street and
Temple Shalom, Salem's only
synagogue, a red brick
building with white columns,
and a Star of David and
Hebrew tablet above the
entrance.
The congregation was
founded 94 years ago. "This is
the oldest continuing con-
gregation on the North
Shore," said Rabbi Sam
Kenner.
The 125 member families
dedicated their present
synagogue 36 years ago.
When their former temple on
Essex Street, near the Town
Common, was destroyed in a
fire, they decided to move fur-
ther east where most Jews
were then living.

The 500-seat sanctuary is a
large, high-ceilinged room
with wooden pews, in a style
typical of New England
restraint and dignity. Other
facilities include a library,
auditorium, classrooms and
office.
Though the name of the
congregation, Temple
Shalom, is not unusual, it's
especially appropriate in this
town. Salem's name derives
from the Hebrew word
shalom, Rabbi Kenner said,
and this congregation has a
tradition of peaceful relations
with the rest of Salem.
"The Jewish community
here has a long history of
good relations with the
secular community," the Rab-
bi said. For example, every
August, the temple sponsors
an annual Jewish Heritage
Festival, which is part of the
city's summer-long ethnic
heritage celebration:
The Jewish festival, held
outdoors at Temple Shalom,
includes Jewish music and
dance and a presentaiton by
the Jewish Historical Society
of the North Shore. And it's
well attended by Jews and
non-Jews alike, Rabbi Ken-
neer said.
Members of 'Temple Shalom
are actively involved in the
life of Salem. One congregant,
Samuel Zoll, was the former
mayor of Salem and is now
chief justice of the state court
system.
Like others, Rabbi Kenner
is aware of the town's image
as "Witch City" — and feels
uncomfortable about it. "The
town is a real contradiction,"
he said. "It makes a lot of
money from that one terrible
chapter in its history, though
