Religion and the profit
motive aside, it doesn't take
long to understand the ap-
peal of Keller's hobby. In the
world of baseball cards, the
smiles are always wide, the
fields are forever green, and
the best is always yet to be.
No matter how dismal a
career a player may have
had, the card manufacturers
always come up with some-
thing nice to say on the back.
Take Larry Yellen. As a
Houston Astro, he pitched
only 26 innings and left
baseball with a 6.23 earned
run average. But his 1965
card never lets us forget that
"Larry went to the same
high school as Sandy
Koufax!"
Or how about catcher
Norm Sherry? He never did
fulfill his promise after four
years with the Dodgers and
one with the Mets. But don't
forget, say the cards, his
brother is Larry Sherry, who
as a Dodger "pitched two
winning games against the
White Sox in the '59 World
Series!" The card doesn't say
whether Norm enjoyed being
reminded of this every year.
Finally, there's Al Silvera.
On the back of Silvera's
card, right above his major
league batting average
(.143), there's a now-
poignant note.
"Every major team wanted
him," it says. "The Redlegs
feel Al will be a big star."
For Keller, however, the
appeal of Jewish baseball
cards is more prosaic. When
asked which Jewish player
he'd most like to have in his
collection, he says, "Izzy
Goldstein, if they made a
card for him."
Izzy Goldstein?
"It's the name. He sounds
like an uncle or some-
thing." ❑

Medical Center will present a
master bench class with Ken
Alan on Nov. 1 at the
Washtenaw County Recrea-
tion Center.
Alan, voted fitness instruc-
tor of 1990 by the Association
for Fitness Professionals has
given fitness instruction to
Jane Fonda, Sylvester
Stallone, Barbara Streisand,
Susan Anton and Jodie
Foster.
The class will be from 6 to
8:30 p.m. There is a charge,
