Georgetown, Mr. Schuette
attended the University of
San Francisco law school.
After completing his law
degree, he contacted Mr.
Baker and volunteered to
work on Mr. Bush's first at-
tempt at the presidency.
In 1980, Mr. Schuette
returned home to Midland,
purchased two acres of land
in Sanford and opened a law
practice. He decided to run
for Congress in 1984. He was
not the likely victor, polit-
ical pundits said, yet he won.
"This race is strikingly
similar to '84," he says, ad-
ding confidently that he will
win. "I'm too young to
retire."
His driver pulls up to the
Northwest terminal at
Metro Airport. He has just a
few minutes to spare before
the flight takes off. Another
campaign day has come to a
close. Congress meets first

Smoling Explores
Crash Potential

Dr. Leslie Smoling of Wind-
sor, who plans to form a finan-
cial management club at the
Jewish Community Center in
November, will discuss profit-
ting in a financial crash in a
lecture at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at
the Maple-Drake Building.
Among the topics the physi-
cian will discuss will be why
he forsees a steep rise in gold
prices in the next two to three
years; the unavoidability of a
stock market crash in the
next 10 months and the
potential profits; and why he
believes pensions will disap-
pear in five to 10 years or be
worth only a fraction of the
purchasing power they have
today.

Prime Minister Menachem
Begin was reported to be
making a satisfactory recov-
ery after a three-hour opera-
tion Oct. 3 at Ichilov
Hospital in Tel Aviv.
Mr. Begin, 77, underwent
surgery to replace a metal
pin which had been inserted
in his right hip after he
broke it in a fall at his home
several years ago.
Also on the mend was
Defense Minister Moshe
Arens after prostate surgery.
