Bloomfield • 855.5528 R obert Maurice Bloom wears a yarmulke. His mother says he is strongly pro-Israel and loves nothing better than to discuss Torah. He cannot attend services, though, and his oppor- tunities to discuss Torah, politics or anything else are rare. Robert Maurice Bloom is on death row. For eight years, Melanie Bloom has been living a mother's nightmare — ever since she learned that her 18-year-old son had killed his father, his stepmother and his young stepsister. "It really feels like bricks crashing down on your head," she says. These days, Melanie Bloom is throwing all her energy into saving her son's life. She meets lawyers, discusses appeals, and champions efforts to abolish the death penalty — efforts that recently heated up be- cause of the impending ex- ecution of Robert Alton Harris. If those efforts fail, Harris will be the first person exec- uted in California's gas chamber in 23 years, and, Melanie Bloom says, "They're lined up like dominoes behind him." Bloom's May 29 execution date was postponed by appeal, and more appeals are expected. To help promote her cause, Melanie Bloom's car carries three identical anti-capital punishment btnnper stickers, and she's also planning to be in Florida this week to march against the death penalty. "The Southern states started all this capital punishment stuff up," Melanie Bloom, a daughter of the South, asserts. "I don't care if it's one man or 50, it doesn't solve the problem. Men will continue to murder. They have from the beginning of the Torah. Even Moses murdered. What I want to get across is that we must be positive; we must start with ourself." As often as she can, Melanie Bloom, a resident of Southern California, stands outside San Quentin holding a sign that says "Jews Against the Death Penalty" or "No Gas Chamber for Jews." ❑
