The Twelfth Annual Alicia Joy Techner Memorial
Parenting Conference is proud to present:

Dr. Benjamin Spock

garments which conceal
truth, free to express fears
and frustrations, not afraid to
cry and raise a voice in each
other's presence without feel-
ing the "shame of
nakedness." This is the ideal
ezer kenegdo, a help-oppo-
site).
The first global catastrophe,
the flood, struck when the
world rejected the ideal rela-
tionship between man and
woman. Rape, pillage and un-
bridled lust became the norm,
even among animals. Only
one family on earth (Noah's)
remained righteous. Now,
with the Tower of Babel,
whatever values Noah at-
tempted to pass on were
again forgotten.
What exactly happened
when one language became
70 is difficult to understand,
particularly because an
earlier text describes that dif-
ferent tribes and different
peoples spoke their own
languages. Yet, metaphorical-
ly, one language means peo-
ple understand each other.
With their ezer-kenegdos, ex-
istential and social loneliness
is kept under bay as they
become one in love and in
progeny.
The Tower of Babel repre-
sents a new stage of deprav-
ity — not sexual but social.
People wanted to create a
great name by building great
towers not for the sake of
Heaven, but for the sake of
materialism; the new god
became splendid achieve-
ments with mortar and brick.
As they reached greater
physical heights, they forgot
the human, interpersonal
value of a friend, a wife, a
life's partner. According to the
Midrash, when a person fell
off the tower, work continued,
but if a brick crashed to the
ground, people mourned.
Thus, the total breakdown
of language fits the crime of
people who may be physical-
ly alive, but whose tongues
and hearts are locked — peo-
ple who are no longer com-
municating with each other.
It was no longer possible for
two people to become one
flesh and one bone, to stand
naked without shame, to
become ezer kenegdos.
The Tower of Babel ends a
major period in the history of
mankind, and the social
destruction it leaves behind
can only be fixed with
Abraham. His message of a
God of compassion who
wishes to unite the world in
love and morality is still
waiting to be heard if
humanity is to be saved. 0

Stresses Affecting Families and
Children in the 90's

7:30 p.m. to
9:30 p.m.

Some people say that the American family is on its deathbed-
with the shortage of good day care, drugs, drastic increase in
teen pregnancy, divorce, child abuse, wife abuse, rape, teen
suicide, fear of nuclear annihilation, spread of poverty and
homelessness, and the lack of universal health care.

Still Dr. Spock doesn't think that. He says that it is within our
power to make a difference. Attend the conference to be
empowered to be a better parent.

This conference has been made possible by the many
generous contributions from the friends and family of
David and Ilene Techner in memory of their beloved
daughter, Alicia to Temple Israel's Alicia Joy Techner
Memorial Fund. It represents their deep commitment to
the value of parenting and their concern for improved
family life.
