"ISRAEL: MOLDING
FUTURE GENERATIONS"

RITA GUR

an important role to play in
the film.
"It's part of the ideas that
motivate the story," Mr.
Levinson said.
Certainly, he adds, there is
no doubt that the Krichin-
sky family —with its specific
references to the Holocaust
and concentration camps
and with its subtle Jewish
sensibilities and man-
nerisms — is determinedly
Jewish.
With such reference
points, Mr. Levinson says
he would consider it gratui-
tous to film a bar mitzvah
scene or other ritual just to
identify the characters as
Jews.
Besides, he says "this film
deals with the American ex-
perience" and the impact of
assimilation on the Jewish
immigrant.
Krichinsky family mem-
bers are shown abandoning
the dining-room table for a
spot in front of the living-
room TV set as "The Texaco
Star Theater" starts broad-
cast. Not so coincidentally,
Aidan Quinn's Jules also
sells televisions for a living
— as did Mr. Levinson's
father.
Mr. Levinson decries the
breakup of the extended
family, calling it a criminal
outgrowth of an evolving
contemporary society —
with TV a prime-time ac-
complice.
But even as times change,
some things remain the
same. Switching his focus to
the present, Mr. Levinson
smiles as he remembers
chastising his children about
the electric bills.
"I heard my own father in
me when I said, 'Doesn't
anybody turn out the lights
in this house?' "
