WORLD vs. ISRAEL
THE 11TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER DANCE
of the
FRIENDS OF THE ISRAEL CANCER ASSOCIATION MICHIGAN BRANCH
AND THE HANOAR CHAFFER
"These events will sub-
side," he said, "and I think
the long-term focus on Iraq
and Kuwait will again take
hold."
Like Mr. Gad-Harf, Sen.
Levin said that he has not
heard severe criticism of
Israel from the American
Jewish community over the
most recent incidents. He
did add, however, that it is
appropriate for American
Jews to speak out, but also to
speak out in a way that is
helpful to Israel.
"In the most recent case
though, we as Jews need to
restrain our criticisms at
this point, because the
details of what happened are
still not clear and are still
rather complicated. The last
thing we can do is jump to
conclusions.
"Also, I think it's very
hard to judge Israel in an ex-
cessive way, because even in
this situation Israel is
judged differently than the
rest of the world. Israel is be-
ing accused of using ex-
cessive force here. How
many times have Arab
governments used excessive
force on their own people
and it's never a United
Nations issue? So, again, we
need to keep much of this in
mind before we as American
Jews come out against Israel
now."
On the home front, leaders
of organizations such as the
Jewish National Fund and
the Zionist Organization of
America have not seen any
drop-off in fundraising or
any complaints from their
members.
Ed Rosenthal of Detroit's
JNF said Jews who are
committed to Israel are
usually not affected by even
the negative news they read
about Israel.
Ezekiel Leikin, executive
vice president of Detroit's
ZOA, said the last thing
Israel wanted to see happen
was the diversion of atten-
tion from the Gulf confronta-
tion.
"I have a feeling that the
investigating committee
that Israel has appointed
will come out with a report
soon, and I think the report
will show that the govern-
ment acted accordingly,"
Mr. Leikin said. "I think
Israel is angry and a little
defiant because they see all
of these Third World coun-
tries coming in to condemn a
democracy. The real problem
is the intifada is winding
down, and it's not getting
enough publicity. This gives
it publicity. American Jews
who condemn Israel now
may be forced by a matter of
expediency to condemn." ❑
