of pride, sorrow and a twinge
of fear.
Part of me • is cheering on
Yitzhak Shamir for pro-
claiming to the world that
Israel refuses to cooperate
with hypocrisy. But a more
pragmatic part of me worries
about the repercussions of
such bravado, particularly
with an administration in
Washington that is not fond
of Mr. Shamir to begin with.
I want to be able to defend
Israel's every action. I want
Israel to be always noble and
moral and thoughtful, to
never make tactical or polit-
ical mistakes or use ex-
cessive violence. But that is
not possible in the real
world. The real world is
messy and nasty, and unfair
to Israel.
It's easy for us to support
Israel when she is popular.
But if all of our rhetoric
about "We Are One" is to
have any meaning, then we
have to stick with her when
times are rough. They are
rough now, and they're go-
ing to get worse.
That doesn't mean we
cannot be critical of Israel's
actions, or that we must be
silent. But our criticism
must be tempered, and we
must make every effort to
call attention to the double-
standard that has become so
pervasive that even we tend
to ignore it at times.
We are members of a fami-
ly and our family is in trou-
ble.
