FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1990

turned-coach immediately
recognized the youngster's la-
tent talents. "Within two
months he had me clearing 2
meters in the Detroit jump."
A year later, the 12th
grader became national youth
high-, long-, and triple jump
champion. He was given his
first real test at the World
Youth Championships in
Athens, where he triple-
jumped 15.30 meters to finish
19th overall.
Despite a succession of nag-
ging injuries, his meteoric
rise continued throughout the
1987 season, during which he
became national champion in
the high jump while finishing
second in long- and triple-
jump. David then decided that
I should concentrate on the
long- and triple-jumps, so the
emphasis in training was
changed." By the end of the
1988 season, he had already
smashed the national long-
and triple-jump records, while
losing his high jump crown to
his great friend and rival
Rami Levran.
On his release from the ar-
my, Nahum received a
scholarship to study at Kan-
sas State, a college with a
long history of outstanding
athletes. "The approach there
was unfamiliar. American
coaches concentrate more on
speed and power than techni-
que, with emphasis placed on
a powerful takeoff rather
than lengthening the second
step."
A month after arriving in
the United States, he was
back on the plane to Israel.
"Deciding to return home was
the best thing I ever did. I'm
an Israeli and as such should
adapt to local conditions."
The 1989 season provided
Nahum's great leap forward
into the world rankings.
"That jump at the Maccabiah
Games placed me among the
world's top 30. I spent all last
winter with David, brushing
up my technique, then in May
of this year I cleared 16.89
meters at the Hadar Yosef
athletics stadium in Tel Aviv.
I could already feel 17 meters
in my feet."
Disaster struck a week
later when, while jumping in
a grand prix tournament in
Budapest, Hungary, he land-
ed badly on his third jump
and needed micro-surgery.
His future plans are clear:
"The only thing I can think
about is Barcelona in 1992.
I'm already over the Olympic
minimum in both the triple-
and long-jumps, although I
can't see myself entering the
latter competition. I'm not go-
ing to make brash predictions
about medals. The Cuban,
Soviet and American jumpers
are still far ahead of me. But

I'm confident of making the
final cut."
