Eschatology

Continued from Page 2

significant addition that
his destruciton would be
the fulfillment of all the
unaccomplished predic-
tions of the earlier pro-
phets (Ezek. 38 and 39; note
especially 38:17).

Deutero-Isaiah painted
the picture of the suffering
servant of God (Isa. 53);
while an unknown prophet
spoke of the time when the
Temple mount would be
the source of instruction to
the world (Isa. 2:2-4; Micah
4:1-4), and others painted
the glories of the restored
Jerusalem (Isa. 60). These
events were conceived by
the prophets as coming in
the near future; eschatolo-
gy transferred them to the
"end of days."
The encyclopedic essay
draws the confidence assured
in the vision and studies of
Maimonides. It forsees an
ideal redemption and a future
that eliminates hatreds and
hunger.
The emphasis in the Reform
Jewish prayer is like a sum-
mary of idealism embodied,
not in what the doomsayers
may accept as the final days
but as prophecy of world rid of
all evil. That is where all
mankind shares prophecy of
faith and fulfillment with the
Jews. That is the eschatology
that gains glory, with hope for
timelessness, in the idealism
of the Jewish approach to the
goals for a better world to
come.
The Universal Jewish En-
cyclopedia essay provides us
with this definitive
eschatological comment;
Throughout the Middle
Ages these teachings were
a part of the fundamental
creed of Judaism. Thus the
eleventh article of the
creed of Maimonides ex-
presses the belief in
reward and punishment in
the world to come, the
twelfth a hope for the
coming of the Messiah, and
the thirteenth the expecta-
tion of the resurrection of
the dead. This is still the
view of the future held by
Orthodox Jews.
Liberal Jews have strip-
ped the doctrine of
eschatology of its super-
natural elements, but still
retain the hope that a
future golden age will cor-
ect the imperfections of
present life.
The Union Prayer Book,
in a recasting of the prayer
first uttered by Abba
Aricha (Rab) in the 3rd
cent. C.E., expresses this
hope at every single ser-
vice: "We fervently pray
that the day may come

when all men shall invoke
Thy name, when corrup-
tion and evil shall give way
to purity and goodness,
when superstition shall no
longer enslave the mind,
nor idolatry blind the eye,
when all inhabitants of the
earth shall know that to
Thee alone every knee
must bend and every
tongue give homage. 0
may all, created in Thine
image, recognize that they
are brethren, so that, one
in spirit and one in
fellowship, they may be
forever united before Thee.
Then, shall Thy kingdom
be established on earth
and the world of Thine an-
cient seer be fulfilled. The
Lord will reign forever and
ever. On that day the Lord
shall be One and His name
shall be One."
In the totality of the
assembled material, we are
provided with a fascinating
study of what could be both
disputing and defining. Most
interesting is that it arouses
attention among all peoples,
and all faiths. E

NEWS

News In English
On Israel TV

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Israel Broadcast Authority's
first English-language
newscast for television aired
this week after eight years of
planning that included
seemingly endless
arguments over who would
bear responsibility for the
service.
The 15-minute English
news bulletin will be broad-
cast at 8 p.m. each weekday
evening, following the
regularly scheduled Arabic-
language broadcasts and
before the start of the news
in Hebrew.
On Friday nights, news
bulletins in English will be
broadcast a half-hour early.
English news broadcasts
from Jordan have long been
available, albeit with a diff-
erent political slant. A pro-
posal to air Israel Televi-
sion's new English news
program at 10 p.m., to
directly compete with the
Jordanian broadcast, was
scrapped because it would
pre-empt prime-time favor-
ites, such as the American
program "Dynasty."
Israel Television's Anan
Safadi, a veteran journalist,
has been appointed exec-
utive producer.
Mr. Safadi, who is from a
prominent Arab family from
Beit She'an is equally at
home in Hebrew, Arabic and
English.
