FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1990
econd grade students
in Chana Green-
field's Hebrew class at
Akiva Hebrew Day School in
Southfield enjoyed the
assignment of building a
model sukkah. Mrs. Green-
field gave the class detailed
instructions on how to build
the sechach (roof) and the
dafnot (walls.) The children
discussed the importance of
the harvest holiday Sukkot.
Many of the second
graders built their sukkah
dioramas using shoe boxes
or wood frames. "My father
helped me with the wood,"
said Tara Pieczenik. Tara
used Lego toys to make a
table for the inside. Daniel
Greenbaum's mother
helped him with the color
chain for the decorations.
Mayer Winkler was espe-
cially proud of his sukkah,
lifting it for a close inspec-
tion.
"The students learned how
to make a sukkah and the
parents got involved. That's
the important thing," said
Mrs. Greenfield.
