eback pitcher of the year can-
didate for the Seattle
Mariners) out of the free-
agent pile," said Bensky.
There is usually a fee
charged for player transac-
tions, starting with the draft
each April, where players are
auctioned off, often for less
than $5. The original
Rotisserie League rules call
for a $260 spending limit on
the draft.
Owners recoup a portion of
their outlay based on their
team's finish.
Detroit-area players said
they end up about $100-$200
in the hole each summer, but
high-stakes players in other
cities reportedly have been
known to drop thousands
playing what essentially
amounts to an adult version
of the Strat-O-Matic or they
dice baseball games they
played as teens.
Area players reported spen-
ding anywhere from one to
five hours a week with the
game, although several said
much of that time is devoted
to reading the box scores each
morning, which, as avid
baseball fans, they'd be doing
anyway.
Newspapers around the
country, in fact, have ex-
panded box scores in the last
year, catering in part to the
tastes of Rotisserie players.
Local players bristled at the
suggestion that the statistics-
heavy hobby is a waste of
time and that participants
are strange or nerdish. "It's
just a hobby, the same as any
other hobby," said Cohn, who
also fits racquetball and
regular workouts at the
Jewish Community Center
into his busy schedule.
"I think the armchair
quarterbacks who spend all
weekend glued to the TV set
watching football are worse,"
he said.
"The people interested (in
Rotisserie baseball) cut across
all lines," added Bensky.
"From doctors and lawyers to
anybody who is a dedicated
baseball fan." CI
