"I think that Gov. Blan-
chard is terrific, and he's cer-
tainly been a strong advocate
for choice and has protected
the rights of young women
admirably over the last few
years.
"I'm disappointed to final-
ly lose that battle, but I do
think that the pro-choice in
Michigan is beginning to
understand the importance of
politics; the notion that we
must retain our friends and
throw out our worst anti-
choice leaders. I think
hopefully, in the next elec-
tion, we'll begin to make some
headway in turning that
around!'
Ms. Kolbert blames Penn-
sylvania's strict laws on the
strong influence of religious
sects that have, for many
years, dominated the
legislative process, as well as
a politically uninvolved and
lax pro-choice movement. But
government, religion and do-
gooders aside, Ms. Kolbert
has no intention of giving up
the fight for women's rights
she began so long ago.
Ms. Kolbert's co-counsel on
the Pennsylvania case, rIbm
Zemaitis, a partner in the law
firm of Pepper, Hamilton and
Scheetz that has also taken
up the fight, says nobody
could do better in battle than
Ms. Kolbert.
"Kitty is a dynamo," Mr.
Zemaitis says. "She has an
extremely strong commit-
ment to women's rights issues
generally, and reproductive
rights in particular. She's
worked very hard as a lawyer
to advance those causes
through the legal process, but
also as an organizer and as a
facilitator. She's brought a lot
of people together through
the years. She's great at
motivating other people and
she's extremely well
motivated herself!'
For her part, Ms. Kolbert
takes one busy day at a time.

Often working around the
clock on abortion rights and
other issues of importance to
women, she also finds time to
write a national ACLU
newsletter every other week
that goes out to about 6,000
activists.
"I see the work I do as a
challenge," she says. "I know
a win in Pennsylvania will be
slower than in other places,
but I am optimistic. But we
can best accomplish what we
want to accomplish if we
make this a political issue.
Again, sending a strong
message that the only accep-
table position for all can-
didates is a pro-choice one!'

Moslem Child

Aid Effective

New York (JTA) — A part-
nership between the
Moroccan Ministry of Health
and an American Jewish
communal agency has
brought dental care and ed-
ucation to over 40,000
Moslem children while ge-
nerating good will between
two peoples.
"This unique partnership
demonstrates that Jews and
Moslems can work together
to pursue a humanitarian
goal," said Sylvia
Hassenfeld, president of the
American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee. "A
child in need can bring peo-
ple together."
Hygiene treatment and
education are the major
components of the mobile
dental clinic initiated and
directed by JDC's Interna-
tional Development Pro-
gram and implemented by
the Moroccan Ministry of
Health, the Dental Faculties
of Rabat and Casablanca
Universities, and Alpha
Omega, the international
dental fraternity.
A colorfully painted city
