EDUCATION Synagogue Plans Adult Classes Adat Shalom Synagogue will launch its education year with a Fall Study Institute, featuring author/editor Ar- thur Kurzweil. Mr. Kurzweil will speak at 11:45 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17. The author of "From Generation to Generation: How to Trace Your Jewish Genealogy and Personal History," Mr. Kurzweil will talk at the morning Lunch & Learn program on `Tracing Your Jewish Roots." His even- ing discussion is "I Don't Know Enough Hebrew. I Jewish Law," a class dealing with the host of ethical ques- tions and moral/legal dilem- mas generated by advances in medical technology. Rod Glogower, University of Michigan instructor and B'nai B'rith Hillel Rabbi, will teach this course on Wednesdays, Oct. 24-Nov. 14 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Hebrew Literacy Pro- gram, sponsored by the Men's Club, will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesdays Oct. 24 through January. Basic Hebrew reading through advanced Hebrew study will be offered by Adat Shalom instructors. The Fall Study Institute is presented by the synagogue's Adult Study Commission. Following the Kurzweil pro- grams, three evening classes will be offered in conjunction with the Midrasha College of Jewish Studies. "Introduction to Yiddish Conversation," a course teaching conversations about everday subjects and songs, is set for Wednesdays, Oct. 24-Nov. 14 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. It will be taught by Ellen Kellman, University of Michigan instructor and author of numerous works on Sholem Aleichem. From 8:30-9:30 pm. Wednesdays, Mr. Kellman will teach "Tevye the Dairyman — The Traditional Jew Faces Modernity." The course will explore the moral predicaments faced by the traditional Jewish father rais- ing a family of liberal daughters. The synagogue also offers "Bio-Medical Ethics in Temple Shir Shalom and the Midrasha, College of Jewish Studies, are co- sponsoring courses meeting for eight weeks beginning Oct. 18. Dr. Shlomo Sawilowsky will teach a course called, "A Look at Jewish Mysticism" at 7:30 p.m. In this introductory course, Dr. Sawilowsky will discuss the nature of spiritual worlds, the soul of man, divine manifestations, Thrah and mitzvot. Rabbi Dannel Schwartz of Temple Shir Shalom will teach a course called "The History of Anti-Semitism and Dealing with Anti-Semitism Today" at 8:30 p.m. Both courses will meet at Temple Shir Shalom. JPM Offers 'Arts' Classes The Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish Community Center will offer the following cultural arts classes for October. Magic Class with Bernie Stevens, for ages 6-12, will be 4:30-6 p.m. Oct. 17. An acting class, for grades 6-8, will be 4-6 p.m. Oct. 16-Dec. 4. The following art classes are available: Monday 5-6 p.m., boys art, ages 5-7; 6:15-7:15, girls art, ages 11-12. Wednesday 5-6 p.m. beginning girls art, ages 7-8 and 6-7 p.m. for ages 9-10.
