afternoon at Detroit's Cobo
Hall.
And this time around the
reverend's message won't be
protested with negatives. In-
stead, a group of metro area
inter-ethnic and inter-
religious groups, including
.Jews, will participate in
Focus:HOPE's Walk for
Justice. Focus:HOPE is a
non-profit Detroit organiza-
tion that conducts classes
and job training with the
goal of keeping people off
welfare. It is not a black
separatist group, but in-
stead, works toward racial
harmony.
The eight-mile walk will
begin 1 p.m. Sunday at 1355
Oakman Boulevard in
Detroit. The Jewish Com-
munity Council will sponsor
a bus to the march. The bus
will leave the United Heb-
rew Schools parking lot,
located on 12 Mile Road
between Lasher and
Evergreen, at 12:30 p.m.
Local Jewish community
leaders say that there really
is not a point where one
stops protesting Rev. Far-
rakhan's message. There's a
general feeling that the
lesson learned in 1930s
Germany should be applied
today, that public messages
of anti-Semitism that attract
any following are considered
dangerous.
"We think that (Rev.) Far-
rakhan is spreading a mes-
sage of hate and separation
of the races and religious
groups," Jewish Community
Council executive director
David Gad-Harf said. "So
what we are doing is strik-
ing a different chord this
time around by joining with
the march for racial justice.
"I think it's true that
(Rev.) Farrakhan's pop-
ularity is growing without
our help. I don't think he's
attracting tens of thousands
of people to college campuses
because we're making an
issue out of it. He's a
charismatic demagogue
who, like other demagogues,
attracts attention wherever
he goes.
"We have long memories
of other demagogues, and we
know we can't let them go
about their business secret-
ly. I'd much prefer for the
general public to see him for
what he is. It is very impor-
tant to expose people like
(Rev.) Farrakhan." -
Mr. Gad-Harf called Rev.
Farrakhan an "outright an-
ti-Semite," and because of
that he cannot go un-
challenged by Jewish organ-
izations. He also said that
Rev. Farrakhan is doing his
best to tear apart whatever
collaboration there might be

between Jews and blacks.
"There is very little differ-,
ence between (Rev.) Far-
rakhan and (defeated U.S.'
Senate candidate) David ,
Duke of Louisiana. He's the
black David Duke. He
speaks during an era of
economic dislocation when
people are looking for
scapegoats. What's scary
isn't the poor people who
flock to him. What's scary is
seeing others who are better
educated and better off econ-
omically coming to rallies of
this sort. I think they're
looking to be tittilated in-
some way."
Sharona Shapiro, regional
director of the American
Jewish Committee, said that
Jews can never speak out too

much against Rev. Far-
rakhan. She added that a
protest against the reverend
is synonymous with a pro-
test against people such as
Mr. Duke.
Ms. Shapiro also com-
mented that it's the younger
generations of blacks she
worries about when it comes
to comments by Rev. Far-
rakhan. The younger ge-
nerations don't have the
histories and experiences of
bridging differences with
Jews.
"If we don't speak out
against those who try to
destroy those bridges, then
we allow an atmosphere of
hate to grow," Ms. Shapiro
added. "It's not necessarily
(Rev.) Farrakhan the man,
but it's the spirit of someone
who knocks down bridges
that we protest against. He
doesn't come to Detroit as a
bridge builder. And Jews
should also protest against
people like (Rabbi) Meir
Kahane. Like (Rev.) Far-
rakhan, his role is to disen-
franchise."
