Baroque Concert In Cultural Center FREE AND THIS COUPON a II 11 11 II II 11 II II 11 II II II 11 II I; Six compositions for winds by Australian composer Percy Grainger will be performed by the Oakland University Wind Ensemble in concert at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 in Varner Recital Hall. "Salute to Grainger" will feature a complete perfor- mance of Lincolnshire Posy. Also on the program are "Spoon River — An American Folk Dance," "The Sussex Mummers' Christmas Carol," "Australian Up-Country Tune," "Irish Tune from County Derry" and "Shepherd's Hey." In May the Wind Ensemble, under direction of associate professor James Dawson, recorded its first compact disc for Coronet Records. All- American Trombone will be released in October an-d features the music of Arthur Pryor. Dennis Smith, prin- cipal trombone of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, is soloist. Guest artists are Armando Ghitalla, former principal trumpet of the Boston Sym- phony Orchestra, and John Mohler, former principal clarinet with the U.S. Marine Band. V American Heart Association The "Richard Luby and Friends" Early Music Series, sponsored by the Center for Creative Studies-Institute of Music and Dance, will hold its first concert of the season, en- titled "Baroque and Classical Textures" 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at CCS-IMD. Richard Luby, recitalist and soloist with leading period in- strument ensembles, will bring into his series early music specialists. The open- ing performances feature the music of Castello, Corelli, Kraft, Haydn, Boccherini, Rameau, and Telemann. A native Detroiter, Mr. Luby studied with Mischa Mischakoff and attended Cass Technical High School before earning degrees from the Curtis Institute, Juilliard and Yale University School of Music. Film Theater Shows Comedy The Icicle Thief, the 1989 comedy by Italian director Maurizio Nichetti, will be at the Detroit Film Theater in the Detroit Institute of Arts, Oct. 5-7. In the film, Mr. Nichetti plays himself — a writer- director-actor who turns up at a television studio to in- troduce his latest film and finds himself so incensed by constant commercials that he takes a trip into the movie itself to straighten things out. Maple-Drake Sets Piano Classes Muriel Kilby, staff pianist for the Chautauqua Sym- phony Orchestra in New York State, will return to the Jewish Community Center where she will teach piano to children and adults. She is ac- cepting advanced students for coaching piano and chamber music repertoire. Ms. Kilby is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and the Juilliard School of Music in New York and has performed as soloist with leading or- chetras in Canada and the United States.
