MITCH'S H Temple Beth El Hosts Symphony In celebration of their 140th year, Temple Beth El will host the Detroit Symphpony Or- chestra 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14. The sympony, under the baton of Leslie B. Dunner, associate conductor, will present a pro- gram that underscores the Jewish connection to classical music. The opening selection, Smetana's The Moldau, celebrates the central river of the composer's homeland. The second piece, Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915, will feature Cantor Gail Hirschenfang as soloist. John Thurman, cellist with both the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit String Quartet, will perform in the third selection, Max Bruch's Kol Nidrei. The final selection will be Felix Italian Mendelssohn's - Symphony. Leslie B. Dunner, conductor, has been assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony Or- chestra since 1987 and was named associate conductor in September 1990. There is a charge. U-D Opens Theater Season The Theatre Company of the University of Detroit Mer- cy opens its twentieth an- niversary season Oct. 12-28 with the Michigan premier of Early One Evening at the Rainbow Bar & Grille by Bruce Graham. Regulars of a shot-and-beer joint try to decide what to do after the town is beset by a sudden, world-threatening disaster, when a surprise visitor appears. Performances will be in the Earl D.A.
