new Americans and their
Detroit relatives, employ-
ment services from the Jew-
ish Vocational Service, and
medical care from Sinai
Hospital.
"Obviously Soviet reset-
tlement is a major priority,
but there are other needs in
the community," Mr. Aron-
son said. "We want to be
able to do both."
While waiting for the new
wave of Soviets, Reset-
tlement Service workers
have expanded the number
of programs they offer to
refugees, Ms. Hyman said.
Many of the Soviets who
have come to Detroit in the
past year face a period of ad-
justment, she said. To help
them deal with the changes,
Resettlement Services now
offers a support group pro-
gram, has expanded services
coordinated by Jewish Expe-
riences For Families and con-
tinues to work with Family
to Family, which matches
Soviets and Americans.
Ruth Canada, supervisor
of refugee employment ser-
vices for Jewish Vocational
Service, said, JVS is contin-
uing to work with new
Americans who have had a
harder time finding
employment.
"Now we're talking about
working with 200 clients
versus 400 clients," Ms.
Canada said.
Last year's large client
load showed the staff it can
handle the pressure, Ms.
Canada said. So even though
the Detroit economy is
faltering, JVS staff has es-
tablished strong contacts
with employers willing to
hire new Americans and ex-
pects to find employment for
them.
In preparation for the new
wave, JVS has installed a
centralized intake system
which allows the staff to con-
tact new Americans within a
week of arrival in Detroit
about job prospects, she said.
Last year, it took an average
of three weeks before a client
could see a JVS staff person.
Like other leaders in-
volved in the resettlement
process, Ms. Canada still
doesn't know exactly what
the future will bring.
"I'd like to have X number
of people and know for sure
when they are coming," she
said. "I would not like to
wake up one morning and
find 200 people on my
doorstep. But that's prob-
ably what will happen." 0
