"But for now, it's our job to keep things quiet." One of the more outspoken of the soldiers, a man in his late 20s, described the psychological juggling re- quired to adjust from reserve duty in the territories to life back home. "We're just one hour from Tel Aviv, where they are dancing until all hours of the morning," he said. "And here, we are facing stones and riots. "If you're a thinking per- son, it's not so comfortable to live in a situation like this. It's a psychological process of reacclimation that we always have to go through." Another reservist men- tioned the difficulties his month-long tour of duty im- poses on his family and his business. But he was heckl- ed by others who reminded him that reserve duty is part of the responsibility of being an Israeli citizen. Regardless of their polit- ical perspectives, the dozen soldiers interviewed were all scornful of those few Israelis who have refused to serve in the territories. "Those who refuse are chicken," said one reservist. "It's just a political act." Another one of the more outspoken soldiers, also in his 20s, summed up the views of many when he said, "We may discuss politics here, but it doesn't help. I'm just a plain soldier. We can't make the political decisions here. That's done in Jerusalem." The reluctance to mix in politics extends to those in- volved in the civil ad- ministration, the Israeli au- thority responsible for municipal and social ser- vices in the territories. "We don't want to create the illusion that we have solved the problem," he said. "The intifada is not over." ❑ I SINGLE LIFE H Group To Host Singles Party All Single adults 21 and over are invited to the Satur- day Night Singles-Northside Dance Party, 8 p.m. Oct. 6 at Roma's of Bloomfield.
