It was really an obstacle to social progress. Party members were using the liberal mask." When he appeared before the House Un-American Ac- tivities Committee in 1951, Mr. Schulberg gave the names of 17 former com- rades in the Party. "I felt these people were so well-known as Commu- nists," he now says, "that it hardly mattered. And that if they had not left the Party by then, they should be named because while we had a blacklist here, in Russia they had a deadlist [a refer- ence to the hundreds of thousands of Russians killed by Stalin]." Mr. Schulberg's naming of names lost him many friends. Some said he was a traitor, not especially to the cause, but to them. Some said he had out-Sammyed them and become a political turncoat to save his own skin. Asked about Mr. Schulberg's HUAC ap- pearance, one writer who did not leave the Party until the mid-1950s preferred not to comment: "That's between him and his God." But others - liberals, fellow travelers and closet Com- munists — would leave the room when Mr. Schulberg entered. Today, Mr. Schulberg says his politics "haven't changed, except for no longer thinking that the Communist Party would be the vanguard of so- cial change to improve the lot of people on the bottom." After the Watts Riots in 1965, Mr. Schulberg estab- lished the Watts Writers Workshop, a training pro- gram for young writers that became hugely successful. He campaigned for Bobby Kennedy for president in 1968, and was at the Ambas- sador Hotel in L.A. when Mr. Kennedy was killed. In his new afterward to Sammy, Mr. Schulberg sits shivah for the new America of the Yuppies: "It's Darwin Time: survival of the fittest! Sure, all people are created equal. Only Sammy Glick is cre- ated more equal than the schleppers, get it? .. . "If that's the way they go on reading it . . ., the 20th- century version of Sammy is going to look like an Eagle Scout compared to the 21st." This from a man who made himself a success by study- ing success and, especially, by observing how fleeting and fickle it can be. Mr. Schulberg knows that the story of Sammy is not just a Hollywood story, but an American story. ❑ open tuesdays thru sundays 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. :,.,t;;•:..*.,,, Vs . \ ..., ,.. .,..;*- v , tV LI & hh‘...:: •••: -,, . ■ Deli Unique .,......:, . . , &,,N Wt 968-0022 lincoln shopping center, 10% mile & greenfield, oak park ..:, There are some who would prefer to miss our Fall Lobster Feast $12.95 25290 GREENFIELD North of 10 Mile Rd.
