even been boxing editor of
Sports Illustrated.
But Mr. Schulberg has also
seen dreams come and go.
He remembers John Gilbert,
a heartthrob of the 1920s,
calling his mother to say he
was about to jump out of a
window. He recalls his
father visiting a washed-up
D. W. Griffith, director of
such classics as Birth of a
Nation, when he was living
at the seedy Knickerbocker
Hotel in New York and
couldn't get a job. And he is
painfully aware that near
the end of his life, his father,
no longer a top man in
Hollywood, took out a full-
page ad in Variety asking for
work.
Sammy made Mr. Schul-
berg famous before he even
turned 30. He now says he
handled his success with
relative aplomb. "because I
was such a veteran of
success and failure at such a
young age. I had seen amaz-
ing falls from the heights. I
knew that not everything I
would do would be as suc-
cessful."
But, worst of all, Mr.
Schulberg has seen conniv-
ing, venal Sammy Glick turn
into a hero for a new gen-
eration. As Mr. Schulberg
describes it, he had glimpsed
"the first disturbing shift in
what was to become a 180-
degree turn in our national
attitude toward Sammy" in
the early 1970s. After a talk
he gave at a college campus,
a student came up to thank
him for creating Sammy.
"He's a great character,"
said this would-be tycoon. "I
love him. I felt a little ner-
vous about going out into the
world and making it. But
reading Sammy gives me
confidence. I read it over and
over. It's my bible."
Hesitantly shaking the
student's outstretched hand,
Mr. Schulberg asked himself,
"What have I done? Or what
has a changing, greedier,
more cynical America done
to Sammy Glick?"
As he spoke on other cam-
puses during the 1970s,
Schulberg found that the
student had "not been an
aberration, but the harb-
inger of a trend. The book I
had written as an angry ex-
pose of Sammy Glick was
becoming a character refer-
ence: How to succeed in
America when really try-
ing!"
Mr. Schulberg is "shocked,
horrified, stunned, worried"
