From here we could see the
museum itself and note its
unusual design of glass and
fused barbed wire. Then, as
we walked towards the exit of
the garden, we passed two
ramps — one leading left,
another leading right.
All this was designed by
Providence architect Ira
Rakantansky, who worked
with a committee of sur-
vivors. "We wanted a living
memorial, something to look
to the future," Ms. Weisman
said as we admired the floral
displays and trees in bloom.
Opened in May, 1988, the
museum and garden have
drawn over 12,000 travelers
from 20 nations within the
past year alone. "It's become
especially meaningful to
Jewish tourists to this area,"
she said.
Across the street at 99 Taft
Avenue, I saw the gold dome
of Emanu-El. Members of this
large Conservative congrega-
tion have created a widely ad-
mired Judaica museum.
Over 400 items were on
display in glass cases, in-
cluding spice boxes, kiddush
cups, menorot, tapestries,
even a bridal gown worn by a
19th century German bride.
Sandy Rackitt, Emanu-El's
executive director, pointed out
the 18th century spice box
from Holland which won a
citation from the United
Synagogues of America.
The collection has expand-
ed over the years through
donations from members as
well as purchases made by a
museum committee. Mem-
bers travel extensively in
order to seek out items for the
collection. "We take this very
seriously," said Ms. Rackitt.
"It's an important statement
of our commitment to
Judaica."

M. Sempliner
Bonn (JTA) — Some 800
Soviet Jews have arrived in
East Germany since the
beginning of the year and
want to stay there per-
manently, according to
Klaus Pritzkuleit, an official
of the East German govern-
ment office that deals with
newcomers.
Mr. Pritzkuleit said most
Soviet Jews who have decid-
ed to settle in Germany pre-
fer East Germany, because
they find they can adapt
there more easily than in the
West.
The West German
government has told East
Germany that it would
honor the status of these
immigrants.
