Call The Jewish News
Schembechler to receive Jewish
Sports Hall's Foon Award.
Glenn "Bo" Schembechler,
president of the Detroit
Tigers and former head foot-
ball coach and athletic direc-
tor of the University of
Michigan, will receive the
fourth annual Alvin N. Foon
Memorial Award from the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall
of Fame on Nov. 5.
The award, named after the
Hall of Fame's founder, is
presented each year to the
Michigan resident who has
contributed significantly to
sports, athletics and recrea-
tion within the state.
Previous recipients are Don
Canham, Ernie Harwell and,
last year, Mike Ilitch.
Schembechler, whose
21-year record at U-M is
known to fans across the na-
tion, was selected for the Foon
Award for his success in
building a strong cohesive
unit by working within the
rules toward one common
goal, according to Hall
Secretary Jim Grossman.
Bo's insistence on "doing it
the right way" established
the U-M football program as
one of the finest in the coun-
try, a model for other univer-
sities to emulate, Grossman
noted.
"Detroit Tiger baseball fans
are confident that he brings
that same unity of purpose
and zest for high achievement
to his current role as the
president of the club,"
Grossman added.
Schembechler will receive
the award at the Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame's
annual induction banquet,
Nov. 5 at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek. The award
will be presented by Detroit
Pistons owner Bill Davidson,
a 1985 Hall of Fame inductee.
This year's inductees in-
clude speed skating great Ben
Bagdade and two former
basketball players from the
1930s, Carl "Cubby" Bayer
Bo Schembechler:
Done "the right way."
and Henry "Honey" Berris.
Bagdade was a founder of
speed skating in Michigan
and an Olympic official for
over 20 years, including the
Winter Olympic Games in
1952, 1956 and 1960.
Bayer, who died in 1986,
was an all-city basketball
player for Northern High
School, a three-year starter at
Wayne State University and
a member of the Detroit
Eagles, Detroit's first profes-
sional basketball team.
He also was a starting short
centerfielder on the Briggs
Beautyware fast-pitch soft-
ball team that won the world
championshp in the late
1930s.
"Honey" Berris was a
Bayer teammate at Northern
High School, where he was
all-city, and also at Wayne
State University, where he
became the first freshman to
captain the basketball team.
Along with Bayer, he par-
ticipated in the 1936 Olympic
basketball trials. Berris was
team dentist for the Pistons
until his death in 1980.
For information regarding
tickets to the banquet, call
Elaine Wolfson, 788-0921.
