IT'S TIME TO
BEYOND
PERFECTION.
made him into something
that he was not."
Once out of the ring,
Rossman ran into trouble.
"You start doing things
you've never done before.
You're hooking up here,
you're hooking up there. I
was doing stupid things. Af-
terwards I'd say, 'What'd I
do that for.' "
Rossman said his biggest
money fight was the
Galindez rematch, which
earned him $100,000, while
against Charles Smith, Al
Fracker, Robert White and
Henry Sims — his last four
opponents — he was paid
between $10,000 and
$12,000 per fight as the
headliner on Atlantic City
cards.
Rossman was no stranger
to the B altimore-
Washington area during his
boxing career. Several years
before winning the light
heavyweight title, he fought
as middleweight at Painters
Mill in Pikesville, Md.,
agianst unknown Casey
Gasic. Rossman was awarded
a "hometown decision," ac-
cording to then Baltimore
Jewish Times sportswriter
Tom Gorman. Gorman said
Rossman was "exceptional-
ly fortunate" that .night to
escape with a draw.
"[Rossman's] father didn't
see it that way," Gorman
reported in the Baltimore
Jewish Times Sept. 22, 1978.
"Confronting me in the
dressing room after the
fight, he said, `I'm asking
you, what's a nice Jewish
boy have to do in this town
to get a win?' "
Gorman told DiPiano that
this was Pikesville, not the
United Arab Republic, and
the decision was a break for
Rossman, who fought poor-
ly.
"I'll tell you something,"
DiPiano told Gorman in the
Painters Mill dressing room.
"Within two years this kid
is going to be a world cham-
pion."
And for those few precious
months, he was.
Following his final four
fights, Rossman continued
his lost adventure in the
outside world when finally,
and without warning, he got
a break in 1984.
"I was just holding on.
I'm stumbling, I'm working
around," Rossman said.
"Then I meet this guy,
Steve Traitz. He's the guy
who gave me a chance. He
hardly even knew me, except
from the fights, and he of-
fered me a job with Local 30,
Roofers. All those [boxing]
guys I was involved with,
nothing. Here's Steve Traitz
and he offers me a job."
