common interest: an urgent
need to fill the power vacu-
um that will inevitably exist
in some future Jorda-
nian/Palestinian state.
Israel has already burnt
its fingers on the Palestinian
issue and will not want an
intrusive role in any new Pa-
lestinian state that may rise
on the ashes of the
Hashemite kingdom. Equal-
ly, however, it will not want
another Lebanon on its
longest and most vulnerable
border.
For these reasons, it may
well acquiesce in Syria's
long- standing objective of
achieving hegemony over
the Jordan and control over
the Palestinian movement
— glittering prizes that will
be bought at the cost of in-
suring that Israel's border
remains as protected and
secure as it was under the
Hashemite monarchy.
The age-old profession of
prophesy remains as.
perilous as ever in the Holy
Land, but as the Gulf crisis
unfolds, the logic of such a
scenario — unsatisfactory
and unpalatable as it might
be — is assuming increasing
credibility.

Hadassah Tests
Undercover Gene
Jerusalem (JTA) —
Researchers at Hadassah-
Hebrew University Medical
Center in Ein Kerem here
have isolated the defective
gene which causes an ex-
ceedingly rare but in-
variably fatal ailment
known as Creutzfeld-Jakob
Disease, or CJD.
Similar to Alzheimer's
Disease, it affects middle-
aged people and kills them
in months.
According to Professor
Oded Abramsky, head of the
Neurology Department at
the Medical Center, the
discovery may be the first
time a gene responsible for a
neurological disease has
been found and the nature of
its defect defined in Israel.
Until now the condition
could be diagnosed only by
brain biopsy. Discovery of
the genetic marker makes
diagnosis possible with a
simple blood test.
Dr. Abramsky said CID af-
fects fewer than one person
in a million every year
among the general popula-
tion.
But among Jews of Libyan
origin it affects 50 people per
million annually. Brain
degeneration progresses
rapidly.
