stituent organization.

Emissaries Sent
To Soviet Union
New York (JTA) - The
largest effort launched by
Agudath Israel to bring Jew-
ish education to com-
munities all across the
Soviet Union is now under
way, as more than 50
emissaries from the United
States, Israel and Europe
are performing vital re-
ligious services, instigating
Torah study programs and
helping run summer camps
this summer.
The summer's activity
represented another stage in
the organization's efforts to
spread Jewish learning and
practice among Jews
throughout the Soviet
Union.
Programs included an
overnight summer camp for
hundreds of children in
Mirograd; a six-week semi-
nar/retreat for adults and
families near Riga; a
yeshiva and day camp with
greater capacity in Kiev;
and community Torah study
programs in Kishinev and
Tbilisi.
In response to urgent re-
quests from Jews in the
Bukhara region, traveling
teams of rabbinic experts
and mohalim, or practi-
tioners of ritual circumci-
sion, were also sent to per-
form critical rabbinic func-
tions in areas of marriage,
divorce and kashrut.
One of the major aims of
the effort is to familiarize
Soviet Jews with Jewish
practices before they depart
for Israel and the United
States, thereby increasing
their chances for integration
upon their arrival in their
new homes.
