Joel D. Tauber

Fred Butzel was revered for his
devotion to the city and Jewish com-
munity of Detroit. For 39 years, this
award has helped perpetuate his ideals
and our community's highest regard for
volunteer leadership and service.

In Joel Tauber, former president of the

Jewish Welfare Federation, those
special qualities have long been recog-
nized. He is the first Butzel Awardee to
have received Federation's top award
for young leadership — the Wetsman
Award — 20 years ago.

He has given of his time and resources
to many local and national Jewish
agencies, institutions and causes —
from the Jewish Community Center,
where he was president, to the United
Jewish Appeal, of which he is national
vice-chairman.

He has focused special concern on
Jewish education and identity and
affiliation. Under his chairmanship,
Federation's Education Study Commit-
tee has submitted far-reaching recom-
mendations for community action at
the conclusion of an exhaustive study.

J oel

Tauber meets other important
criteria of the Butzel Award in his
contributions to the city of Detroit,
serving as vice-president of United
Way for Southeastern Michigan and
co-chairman of the Detroit I nterfaith
Round Table.
