The Aug. 2 decision, made by a joint subcommittee of the Solidarity-led govern- ment and the Roman Catholic Episcopate, man- dates Catholic religious in- struction and prayers in public schools, from kinder- garten through high school. Many Catholics and senior Education Ministry officials, not to mention the country's tiny Jewish community, are opposed to the new policy and resent the fact that the move was made without a parliamentary debate. Israel Vows To Retaliate Jerusalem (JTA) — Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir warned Iraq Sept. 24 that it could expect instant reprisal if it followed through on Saddam Hussein's latest threat to attack the Jewish state. Briefing the Knesset For- eign Affairs and Defense Committee and speaking later to reporters, Mr. Shamir maintained Iraq was deliberately trying to drag Israel into war, to break up the Arab alliance with the Western powers in the Per- sian Gulf crisis. The prime minister was responding to a threat made by the Iraqi president, who said, in a statement read on Baghdad Radio, that he would attack Israel and the Middle East oil fields if Iraq was choked economically by the U.N.-mandated trade embargo.
