New York (JTA) — The
Center for Holocaust
Studies, Documentation and
Research, established in
Brooklyn by Dr. Yaffa
Eliach in 1974, has merged
with New York's Living
Memorial to the Holocaust-
Museum of Jewish Heritage.
The center's archives con-
tain more than 3,400 taped
interviews, the largest such
collection in the world out-
side of Yad Vashem in
Israel, as well 4,000
photographs, 500 artifacts
and documents, and a
library of 2,500 volumes.
The center's oral history
project includes interviews
with Holocaust survivors,
former American soldiers
and liberators, righteous
gentiles who sheltered and
rescued Jews during the
Holocaust, journalists, Red
Cross relief workers and
other witnesses.
The Living Memorial to
the Holocaust-Museum of
Jewish Heritage will be con-
structed in Battery Park
City, on the Manhattan
shoreline opposite the
Statue of Liberty and Ellis
Island. It is scheduled to
open in 1992.
The museum's completed
facilities will encompass
permanent and temporary
exhibition galleries, a com-
puterized interactive learn-
ing center, a memorial hall,
and a sculptured terrace as
well as administrative of-
fices. It is expected to attract
more than 500,000 visitors
annually.

Iraq's Threats
Brushed Off

New York (JTA) — Iraq's
latest threat to attack Israel
drew chilly responses this
week from Israeli Foreign
Minister David Levy and
U.S. Secretary of State
James Baker.
In what was described as
his toughest statement yet
on the Persian Gulf crisis,
Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein vowed last week to
attack Israel and Middle
East oil fields if Iraq is chok-
ed economically by the
U.N.-imposed trade em-
bargo.
"If we feel that the Iraqi
people are being strangled,"
Mr. Hussein said in a state-
ment read on Baghdad
Radio, "then we will
strangle all those who are
the cause of this."
Israel and Middle East oil
fields "will be transformed"
