"The Language, History, Culture and Literature of Modern Israel" will be taught by Nira Lev and Narda Oz. Ms. Lev is an associate pro- fessor in Hebrew Language and Literature at the Midrasha, who has taught Hebrew language and literature courses. Narda Oz, formerly a Hebrew instructor at New England Academy of Torah in Providence, R.I:, has developed a course cur- riculum for students and a program of teaching skills. This course, which is design- ed for Hebrew day school graduates or for advanced Hebrew students, will discuss Israel, its history, the life of its people and current events through literature, news- papers, and videos. This course meets on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. A community service pro- gram is for students who want to work with social ser- vice agencies. Students will be linked with an agency dur- ing their internship and develop practical experience. This course, which will be taught by Susie Rosenzveig, meets Sundays from 11 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. "The Jewish Political Tradi- tion: Jews in American Politics" will give students the skills to become active in American political life and will concentrate on issues of importance to the Jewish community. Students can par- ticipate in a four-day seminar in Washington, D.C., "Panim El Panim," sponsored by the Washington Institute for Jewish leadership and Values March 3. The course will be taught by Judy Silberg Loebl, Detroit coordinator for Panim El Panim. It will meet on Sundays from noon to 12:50 p.m. Naomi Blumenberg, an ar- tist who has returned to Detroit from Israel, will teach "Creative Arts: Jewish Iden- tity through Art." Students will have a hands-on oppor- tunity to learn about Jewish culture through art. She will explore ways in which the spirit of the Jewish people has been expressed artistically. This course meets Sundays from 11 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. A creative arts — acting course, taught by Corinne Stavish, an instructor of speech communication at Wayne State University and Lawrence Technological Uni- versity, will meet Tuesdays at 4 p.m. Students will study Jewish stories through plays, theater games, improvisation, mime and music. Temple, Midrasha Plan Courses The Midrasha-College of Jewish Studies, a division of the Agency for Jewish Educa- tion, and Temple Emanu-El will co-sponsor courses begin- ning Oct. 1. "What Makes a Syna- gogue" will be taught by Rab- bi Lane Steinger of Temple Emanu-El. Rabbi Steinger will examine the symbols and characteristics of a Jewish congregation. The class will meet at 7 p.m. "Comparative Judaism: What's the Difference?" will be taught by Cantor Norman Rose of Temple Emanu-El. Cantor Rose will discuss Jewish philosophy and ritual practices at 7 p.m. "Torah Through Move- ment" will be taught by Lin- da Steinger of Temple Emanu-El. Ms. Steinger will interpret the Bible through movement activities which il- lustrate the themes. It meets at 7 p.m. "The Prayer Book" will be taught by Rabbi Eliezer Finkelman, director of B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundations of Greater Detroit at 8 p.m. "Fill the Earth and Subdue It," an introduction to Jewish views on the environment, will be taught by Rabbi David Feder of Temple Emanu-El at 8 p.m.
