Shas Seeks End
To Der! Affair
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
leadership of the Shas party,
calling for an end to what it
terms an unfair campaign
against Interior Minister
Arye Deri, nevertheless has
no intention of quitting the
Likud-led coalition over the
issue.
Mr. Deri, 31, a protege of
Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Shas'
pre-eminent spiritual men-
tor, is suspected of improper
disbursement of ministerial
funds and other financial
improprieties.
The probe is being con-
ducted by the Justice and
Police ministries, both con-
trolled by Likud.
The four rabbis of Shas'
Council of Sages, headed by
Yosef, urged Prime Minister
Yitzhak Shamir on Wednes-
day night to put an end to
the "unfair campaign of
leaks and defamation of
character" they implied the
police were waging against
Deri.
The council called the
young Cabinet member "an
emissary of the rabbis, hon-
est and loyal, active and suc-
cessful on behalf of Torah
and education, who has rais-
ed the profile of Sephardic
Jewry."
Communications Minister
Rafael Pinhasi of the Shas
party demanded that the
police either bring formal
charges or drop the case.
Police Minister Ronni Milo
responded on a television
interview Wednesday night
that the investigation would
be expedited if Deri stopped
stonewalling and cooperated
with the authorities.
Mr. Deri, for his part,
accused the police of dropp-
ing innuendos and tenden-
tious leaks for three months
before they got around to
questioning him only last
week.
The police wanted to be
seen "going through the mo-
tions," Mr. Deri charged and
said he would not answer
their questions at this stage.
Mr. Deri's closest aide, Zvi
Jacobson, is being held in
custody on suspicion of
fraud, theft and breach of
trust.
Rabbi Yosef reportedly
plans to conduct Rosh
Hashanah services at a syn-
agogue close to the jail
where he is held.
The police, meanwhile, are
coordinating their investiga-
tion of Mr. Deri with
evidence that the minister
and ins:: aides illegally ar-
ranged* to tap the telephone
of Yediot Achronot reporter
Mordechai Gilat, who broke
the Deri story.
A former police officer,
Ilan Hamra, told reporters
Wednesday that he tapped
Gilat's phone and handed
the tapes to a Shas aide,
Yossi Tsuberi, for delivery to
Mr. Deri.
Mr. Tsuberi was arrested
with the evidence and
released on bail. He claimed
Mr. Deri knew nothing of
the matter.
`JCC Month'
Held As Tribute
New York (JTA) — Jewish
Community Centers and
YM-YWHAs across the con-
tinent will celebrate the
first-ever "JCC Month" from
Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. JCC
Month will pay tribute to the
contributions these com-
munity centers have made to
society in the past century.
At first, the centers served
as a haven for refugees re-
quiring help in settling in
their new home; later, as a
gathering and meeting place
for countless young people;
and today, as a complete so-
cial service agency that
meets the needs of people of
all ages and in all cir-
cumstances.
The goal of the program is
to make communities aware
of the myriad high-quality
programs the JCCs and Ys
have to offer.
Cities including San An-
tonio, North York, Ontario,
and New York have already
issued formal proclamations
to mark the event; states
that have done so include
California, Connecticut and
Minnesota.
Centers across the conti-
nent are planning special ac-
tivities to celebrate JCC
Month, including special
events, promotions and dis-
counts.
The JCC Association has
issued a manual on how to
market and promote the
event, as well as give pro-
gram suggestions. For in-
formation contact Leonard
