memorate the Holocaust to
be videotaped eyewitness
testimonies, being collected
by Yale University and the
U.S. Holocaust Museum,
among others. The Holo-
caust Memorial Center in
West Bloomfield has a col-
lection of 150 tapes made by
local survivors.
"What I found so moving
about the testimonies was
, that I was shocked, but I was
not repelled. I wanted to
understand what those peo-
ple were saying and what
they felt. It personalized the
catastrophe,"Ms. Miller
said.
Ms. Miller cringes when
describing the original plans
for the U.S. Holocaust
°Memorial, which included
"Towers of Remembrance"
that were to be filled with
the shoes, clothing and hair
of camp victims.
"The display of masses of
shoes, the masses of hair, the
'-°-'
- pieces of clothing. That does
the opposite to me. And I'm
very worried that we don't
, confuse, in our effort to
commemorate, shock value
with provoking thought and
sustaining interest.
"It's easy to get people's
attention. It's much harder
to get them to think."

Jerusalem (JTA) — A new
yeshiva was inaugurated
last weekend on Mount
Scopus in east Jerusalem, in
the heart of an Arab neigh-
borhood.
However, unlike the set-
, tlement in April of the St.
John's
. , Hospice in the Old
City s Christian Quarter by
150 Jews that caused an
international furor, the
reaction to this new set-
tlement has been quiet.
The building which serves
the yeshiva was purchased
three years ago by an
American contributor, for
the purpose of housing the
National Religious Party
headquarters.
The renovated building is
located in the heart of a pine
grove on a 1.5 acre site,
overlooking the eastern side
of the Old City. Neighbors of
Yeshivat Beit Orot are the
former Armenian patriarch;
the Mormon University; a
Lutheran Church building;
the Arab-operated Augusta
Victoria Hospital; and from
both other ends the Mount
Scopus campus of the Heb-
rew University and the Arab
neighborhood of A-Tur.
