HA The Original Since 1939 The Hagopian family and all our staff sends "Germans are tired of their special guilt; they point to the historic sins of others." And in doing so, Ms. Miller writes, they open the door for a type of subtle revi- sionism that tends to "soften the hard edges of Hitler's unprecedented mobilization of sadism in the name of na- tionalism." In the United States, there is little reticence about por- ,,traying the horror of the Holocaust, or in pointing fingers. Ms. Miller talks with wonder about the 19 Holocaust museums, five libraries, 48 resource centers and countless memorials built by the American Jew- ish community, the world's largest. Yet her admiration is ,inged with caution. "I came back and found an almost maniacal obsession with this event that certainly one did not find in Europe," she said. "It was a total contrast. But I began to realize that certain aspects of our history were being emphasized, cer- ain aspects of our role were being played up over others. ' Ms. Miller described the initial plans for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Muse- um being built in Washing- ton. "It called for visitors to enter through something called the 'Hall of the Lib- erators.' Did the U.S. really liberate the camps in that sense? Did we set that as a goal? We were moving through Europe. Deborah ipstadt, the historian, said we stumbled across the camps." A section on the memorial recounts the bitter disputes among its Jewish planners that at times threatened to sink the project. In the final accounting, however, Ms. Miller said she has "no doubt, knowing the people who are working on the mu- seum here, that it will be ex- traordinary, honest and ac- curate." Rather, it is Mr. Hier's admittedly "Hollywood" style of commemoration that crystallized Miller's belief in what is wrong and right about American Jewish at- tempts to remember the Holocaust. "There is nothing in this country that can't be reduc- ed to kitsch and gimmickry. It is a national weakness," she said. "We are a schmaltzy people, Jews and non-Jews.
