An Overview
Of Tel Aviv U.

Located in the heart of the
nation, Tel Aviv University
is Israel's largest institute of
higher learning. Since 1964,
it has grown into the largest
Jewish university in Israel,
and through its nine
faculties, 90 departments
and more than 50 research
centers, its more than 20,000
students partake in the most
comprehensive course offer-
ings and research activities
in the nation.
Tel Aviv University's
broad spectrum of studies
touches the people of Israel
in many ways. Its Sackler
Faculty of Medicine, the
nation's largest, serves close
to 40 percent of the popula-
tion. TAU's Recanati School
of Business Administration,
rated among the top 10 in
the world, works closely
with Israel's business
leaders.
The university's law
school, Israel's oldest and
largest, also plays an impor-
tant role in Israeli society,
and its faculty has been in-
strumental in the drafting of
a new constitution currently
under debate in the Knesset.
TAU is also home to Israel's
only faculty of visual and
performing arts, which in-
cludes departments in
theater, film and art.

Project Otzma
Selects 63

New York (JTA)
"Project Otzma," a vol-
unteer program in Israel
designed to strengthen the
bonds between young adults
in North American com-
munities and Israel, has
selected 63 young adults
from 17 Jewish federations,
including Detroit, to par-
' ticipate in this year's pro-
gram.
Sponsored by the Council
of Jewish Federations, Otz-
ma involves a year of service
in Israel followed by a com-
mitment to serve the local
Jewish community upon
return. It is now in its fifth
year.
In Israel, the participants
spend three months on a
kibbutz ulpan to acquire the
fundamentals of Hebrew
language; six weeks working
with mostly troubled chil-
dren at Youth Aliyah
villages; four weeks in the
Arava, the southern desert
of Israel, working on a
moshav or kibbutz; and
three months of communal
service work in Project
Renewal neighborhoods.
