probably will be responsible
for Jewish Air Force per-
sonnel as well as those in the
Army. In that case, Rabbi
Lapp said, he'd become "the
`chief rabbi of Saudi
Arabia.' "
As for the dog tag issue,
Rabbi Lapp said he would
counsel Jewish soldiers to
> keep their Jewish identifica-
tion even if they feared what
would happen if they were
captured.
"God forbid, if a Jewish
soldier dies and no one
knows his religious affilia-
tion, there would be a big
problem," he said.
As for the chaplains them-
selves, Rabbi Lapp said a
new directive tells them to
remove their distinctive in-
signia when outside Ameri-
can enclaves Instead of a
cross for Christians and the
Tablets of the Law topped by
a Jewish star for rabbis, all
chaplains will wear a simple
pin that says "Chaplain."
Rabbi Romer, a native of
Huntington, W.Va., who was
ordained in 1979 at Hebrew
Union College-Jewish In-
stitute of Religion., said he
has no problem with that.
Still, the chaplain for
1,100 men and women in the
724th Support Battalion ac-
knowledged "a certain am-
bivalence" about going to
Saudi Arabia, which not
only opposes the Jewish re-
ligion but also remains in a
state of war with the Jewish
state of Israel.
Rabbi Baron, however, was
more vehement. "I believe
Saddam Hussein is a second
Adolph Hitler and we're go-
ing there to prevent a second
Holocaust," he said while
still preparing to leave.
"[Saddam] said he's going to
destroy Israel. That's three
million Jews. And he'll do it
if he isn't stopped. For Jews,
this isn't about whether
your gas costs $2 a gallon or
$3 a gallon."
