"It's proof that we can come to agreements with each other in 'real' life too," he added. Ms. Rosenbaum agreed, saying that although con- flicts might occur, "You can be really close without always having the same mind." Mr. Heller saw purposes in the program apart from br- inging together Jewish teen- agers from all denomina- tions. "Yes, of course we're selected because of our being active in school or commun- ity work, impressions we gave in the application interviews and our possible capability to become future Jewish leaders," he said. "But what I also see as a purpose is to get to better understand myself and other people, and that they get to know themselves better. Maybe, after this program, they'll say: 'I might be Reform or Conservative, .but it doesn't prevent me from being more observant.' "Also, I see that education is a pillar for all of us. To know more means you're able to do more," Mr. Heller said. Mr. Pianko responded to his Orthodox counterpart. "Although I don't believe in being too observant, I do believe it's important to have a certain knowledge of Judaism, at least to keep the tradition going. Before this tour, I never opened a Gemarah. Here, I learn a section, a few pages of the Talmud with my Reform, Conservative and Orthodox friends. I call that unique." For all participants, the program helped to enrich their Jewish lives. "During the course of the program," Ms. Rosenbaum said, "I questioned myself about a lot of things, but up till now, nothing has chang- ed my ideas radically." As for Mr. Heller, "I'll be more Orthodox after the summer," he said. Mr. Pianko concluded, "We Jews have the rare abil- ity not to get along with each other. What we tried to do this summer in Israel in Bronfman's Youth Fellowship was to counter that built-in national characteristic." 0 Jewish Telegraphic Agency Complete Mechanical, Electrical Repairs and Air Conditioning Service Wish All Their Friends and Customers A Very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous NEW YEAR 111v311 nalz inlv7 May the coming year be one filled with health, happiness and prosperity for all our friends and family.
