Dutch Book
Honors Cantors

Amsterdam (JTA) — A
richly illustrated two-
volume tribute to the great
cantors of Amsterdam has
just been published here.
The first copies of the set,
titled Amsterdam Chaz-
zanut, were presented to the
man who compiled the mate-
rial, Professor Hans
Bloemendal, chief cantor of
the Ashkenazic Congrega-
tion here for more than 40
years.
The folio-size volumes con-
tain the annotated scores of
all cantorial music arranged
by successive cantors accor-
ding to the various holidays.
Although most Amster-
dam cantors came from
Eastern Europe, a distinc-
tive Amsterdam style of
chazzanut developed, which
differs from Eastern Euro-
pean .chazzanut in that it
avoids the repetition of
words and is less baroque.
The book lists every cantor
who officiated in Amster-
dam. The most famous, Isaac
Heymann, was chazzan here
for 50 years, from 1860 to
1910.
The last prewar cantor was
Isaac Maroiko, most of
whose family was deported
to their death by the Nazis.
The presentation was
made to Mr. Bloemendal last
week by Georgina Hes,
daughter of the late Hyenny
Kohnstamm van Voolen,
who initiated the project
many years ago with her
late husband.
The book contains Dutch
and English translations of
all prayers with appropriate
illustrations.
The orchestration is by
Joppe Poolman van
Beusekom and book design
by Otto Treumann. The two
volumes are priced at $90.
