THE JEWISH NEWS

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
decision to seek to stop
publication of a book about
the Mossad may have had
the opposite result than was
desired, some commentators
are saying.
The temporary injunction
obtained by the Israeli Em-
bassy in Canada from a
Toronto court last week only
called worldwide attention
to the book, By Way ofDecep-
tion: A Devastating Insider's
Portrait of Mossad.
Observers here suggest
that had it not been for the
injunction, the book would
have attracted few readers
and quickly been forgotten.
It was described by
government sources as a
"mixture of a few facts and a
lot of imagination."
Meanwhile, a campaign
continued in Israel to depict
the author, Canadian-born
Victor Ostrovski, as an
unstable character,
dishonest and motivated by
greed.
Mr. Ostrovski, an Edmon-
ton, Alberta, native raised in
Israel who holds dual Israeli-
Canadian citizenship, wrote
the book along with Cana-
dian journalist Claire Hoy.
He went into hiding after
telling a news conference in
Toronto last week that his
life was threatened by
Mossad agents.
Official sources here
stressed that far from being
an "insider," Mr. Ostrov-
ski's association with
Mossad was limited to less
than 18 months as a trainee
after which he was dismiss-
ed as "unfit for the service."
It had been a mistake to
recruit him in the first place,
security sources maintained,
and he was gotten rid of as
quickly as possible.
According to these sources,
the same pattern applied to
his career in the Israeli
navy, which he joined in
1977 after attaining the
rank of captain in the
military police.
He was dismissed from the
navy in 1982 because he was
"unstable," military sources
said.
His immediate superior in
the navy complained that
Mr. Ostrovski ran a private
translation business ashore
while supposedly on naval
duty, using a navy building
as his office.
Israel Radio reported that
during office hours he also
ran a vegetable home
delivery service registered
in his wife's name.
He used his navy
severance pay to invest in a
