two experts on the subject to
provide personal advice to
the untrained, ineloquent or
unimaginative single who
wants to write the perfect
personal.
Susan Block hosts her own
dating show, "Match Night"
on Los Angeles radio station
KFOX.
The Philadelphia native
also owns telephone dating
lines and has written several
books, including Advertising
for Love — How to Play the
Personals.
Rabbi Shnayer Lewis is an
adviser for singles activities
at a Jewish studies center in
Baltimore, Md.
Rabbi Lewis, who in early
June was married for the se-

eight years in that condition.
So who writes personal
ads?
All kinds of people, Ms.
Block says. They're usually
single, but not always.
Ten years ago, personals
were only for the avant-
garde, the weird and the
desperate, she says. Now,
they are a "veritable
yuppie's garden of dating
delights."
Even so, personals are not
only for yuppies. Artists,
retired and working-class
people, even multi-
millionaires write personals.
"Here in L.A., we see

`beautiful model' a lot in
personals," she says.
"Maybe they're exag-
gerating a little bit, but I've
known a lot of eligible, at-
tractive people who do this."
The stigma to writing per-
sonals is going away, Ms.
Block says. "Placing a per-
sonal has no more of a
stigma than joining a dating
service or going to a singles
bar."
Stigma or not, many sin-
gles are afraid to place per-
sonal ads to find a mate or
even a friend.
"Personal ads take the
least guts of any way to meet
people, and yet people still
can't work themselves up to
it," Rabbi Lewis says.
This fear is indicative of
the "pervasive insecurity" of
singles around the country,
he says.
A simple way to overcome
that fear, he advises, "is to
tell yourself that this is only
a test, that it doesn't really
count, that you don't want to
get married this month, that
you won't marry anyone who
responds to this ad."
Once you've worked up the
nerve to write an ad, what do
you say?
Ms. Block suggests that a
personal ad should be very
specific. "The way you suc-
ceed in love is by being
specific, by setting goals."
"You should be very
specific about the things
that are important to you,"
she says. "Saying that you
want a non-smoker is not too
specific."
One recent singles ad
sought an attractive, Scan-
dinavian, blue-eyed blonde,
between 18 and 25.
Another ad insisted that
respondents must play
tennis and racquetball, or
that they be extremely ge-
nerous, filthy rich, very
discreet, very sensual,
warm, open, clean and sin-
gle.
Writing a personal is a
good opportunity to look at
yourself, Ms. Block says.
