For Anne, hope alternated
with despair. In June 1944,
she heard about the
American and British troops
landing in France. "Hope
gives us fresh courage. The
great thing is to remain
calm."
On August 1, 1944 it was all
over.
The fateful knock on the
door, the trip to the police sta-
tion, Auschwitz, Bergen-
Belsen, ended this young,
talented life and the lives of
her mother and sister. Only
her father survived.
One museum room reminds
us of his achievements: The
Diary of Anne Frank in 52
languages, book upon book.
Fifteen million sold so far.
The visitor count is about
500,000 a year. The museum
offers many interesting
documents. It also contains a
complete history of Hitler's
brutal rise to power, aimed at
school classes. The Holocaust
is brought to life here.
Anne Frank died in the con-
centration camp of Bergen-
Belsen in March 1945 at the
age of sixteen.
The museum at 263
Prinsengracht is open Mon-
day to Saturday, 9-5 p.m.;
Sundays and holidays, 10-5
p.m.; closed on Yom Kippur. ❑

An Overview
Of Ben-Gurion U.

Ben-Gurion University of
the Negev was founded in
1969, inspired by the lofty
inspirations of David Ben-
Gurion, Israel's first prime
minister. It was charged
with spearheading the de-
velopment of the Negev
desert, which covers more
than 60 percent of Israel's
territory.
With campuses in Beer-
sheba and Sde Boker, Ben-
Gurion University is a major
center of education and
research in Israel, and plays
a leading role in the estab-
lishment of industry and the
promotion of education and
culture in the communities
of the Negev.
Undergraduate and
graduate students may
choose from a wide array of
courses in the faculties of
natural sciences, engineer-
ing sciences, health sciences,
and humanities and social
sciences.
Desert research projects
have resulted in important
breakthroughs and new ap-
plications, not only for the
development of the Negev,
but for many countries
throughout the world.
