117 /C_) ed him into taking an active role in the quest for racial justice. He developed a strong sense of social consciousness that led to a friendship with, as well as moral and financial support for, the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960s. But his awareness of racial injustice was not limited to the home front. During those same years, he fought the war against racial injustice in the American South, Charles also fought it abroad, particularly the notorious policy of apar- theid in South Africa. Often modest to the point of silence, Charles makes an ex- ception for the State of Israel and world Jewry. Among the many world leaders he has met, Charles says the one he most enjoyed was former Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, with whom he had a conver- sation of many hours during a concert tour of Israel not long before Ben-Gurion's death. "Blacks and Jews are hook- ed up and bound together by a common history of persecu- tion," he says. "And if some- one besides a black ever sings the real gut bucket blues, it'll be a Jew. We both know what it's like to be someone else's footstool." A man who could easily turn his back on world con- flict and be content to reap the many rewards of his long- standing career, Charles is not like every other man. He is famous now. He knows that. His star sits on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame. There is the bronze medallion cast, presented to him by the French Republic on behalf of its people. There are the Halls of Fame to which he's been inducted: Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock 'n Roll. There are many gold records and 10 Grammy Awards. And there is much, much more. But, for him, there's still a lot of music to make and a lot of work to right all the wrongs around the globe. "There's still a lot of pre- judice in the world today," he says. "But you must realize that all of us, regardless of what our calling is, still live in the world with other peo- ple. We're not separated from the world just because we happen to be a musician or a painter or whatever. We're > still all part of one big world, so whatever happens affects us all. I do what I can. I think all of us owe that to each other; to give something back to the earth and its people just like we take something out." ❑ OF SOUTHFIELD Restaurant 6066 MAPLE, North of Orchard Lake Rd. • 851-0805 AND CARRY-OUT DEPT 851-6577 (next door to our full-service restaurant) Toni Belli and Elia Nicholas With Their Management and Staff Extend Most Sincere Wishes For A Very Healthy and Happy New Year We Gratefully Wish The Entire Jewish Community The Greatest of Health _.__ l and Happiness For The New Year The Dimitri Syros Family & Employees Thank You! ubll. ■ ••• ■ •• WI V.
