John Reaser of Nicky's in Top of Troy Building on W. Big Beaver, it has to be a badge of some- thing. Not just because of being in the restaurant/nitery game with its high mortality rate, but that so many never ex- pected them to last more than a year at most . . . Especially after taking over the same locale following demises of Bonaventure, Kogy's and Sidney's. But here they are, still go- ing strong . . . and even get- ting up more steam. Nicky's seventh anniver- sary was Mardi Gras style with its balloons, colorful ar- rays and jam-packed surroun- dings . . . So much good food by Executive Chef John DiCeco and his staff, laughter and fun frolicking galore, con- viviality in much abundance. Chuck Daly shaking hands and smiling when folks men- tion that no one will beat the Pistons next year; Carol Bobier, day manager, wearing the new mini flounce and her usual big smile; Rosalie Fox; Stuart Left; Linda Caruso, evening hostess past three years, remembering when she opened Nicky's seven years ago; John, Nick and their night manager, Steve Blow, in tuxedos for the always-festive- filled shindig; Yale Upfall; Ernest Drucker getting his exercise with a lot of dancing. First time in eons folks have seen Arthur Klein in a shirt and tie . . . but wasn't for long . . . Off came his tie and jacket, baring bright red suspenders on the dance floor as he kept up with the Nouveute beat; WJR Radio Sports Director Frank Beckman; John Psaila, ex- NFL back; Excalibur's Marty and Karen Wilk; Antonio and Linda Foglio; Nick Sorise bus- ing tables; John Reaser carry- ing trays of food; Dr. Eddie Hayes; David Israel with the name of the country where he was born . . . David came here in 1981 from Munich where he worked with the Israeli government . . . He still main- tains a home in Haifa; Mar- cie Kogan, etc. While eyeing the crowd, one couldn't help but recall that this was number seven for a place folks had once said, "Well, here goes another one" . . . Nick and John have sure fooled them . . . the doubters soon learning that Nicky's was for real . . . here to stay as a popular restaurant/ nitery power . . . Nice to see something like this happen to a couple of guys like Nick and John. SHEL ROTT tapped wife Carol on the shoulder and said, "You know what? She's good!" . . . He was talking about their 18-year-old daughter, Michelle Rott, who was first place winner in the quarter-final round of the WJR and Dodge Quest for Ex- cellence talent competition at Oakland Community Col- lege's Smith Theatre. Michelle won in pop (three categories are pop, jazz and classical) for her singing of "On My Own" from Les Miserables . . . Semi finals are Oct. 3 at OCC and finals Jan. 8 at the Fisher Theatre .. . Michelle is a freshman in music and business at Eastern Michigan University . . . Shel and Carol have per- formed before thousands of people . . . but probably never got as big a thrill. CONGRATS . . . to Al Resnick . . . on his 80th birth- day . . . celebrated with party by wife Jean at Gibbys . . . Al and Jean now live in Palm Aire, Fla. . . . to Isabelle Unrot . . . on her 85th birth- day . . . With weekend festivities of dinner, party and Sunday brunch by her family. 25TH ANNIVERSARY celebration of Machus Red Fox, Maple and Telegraph, will benefit Michigan Opera Theatre's community pro- grams, this Sunday, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Broadway musical sketches, Master Chef Leopold Schaeli's buffet, and open bar will highlight the special anniversary. DOUBLE FAMILY retire- ment celebration was recent- ly as Flossie and Leon Maloff put their work loads behind, them . . .
