New York Offers
Updated Kosher Dining
ew York has more
than 15,000 eating
establishments. Not
too long ago there were only
a handful of strictly kosher
restaurants in the city.
Recently, within the span of a
short time, several dozen
strictly kosher eateries have
opened their doors.
Visitors to the city can now
enjoy French, Italian,
Chinese and Middle Eastern
foods, along with traditional
dishes, in various parts of
Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Some of the restaurants have
special prices at certain times
of the day.
New York's biggest culinary
attraction this year is the new
kosher yacht cruise. Follow-
ing is a selection of the kosher
eateries in Manhattan.
On the Lower East Side,
and nearby, there are small
strictly kosher take-out
places and restaurants. One
of the large establishments is
Bernstein's On-Essex, which
calls itself the "originators of
strictly kosher Chinese
cuisine," and which also is
known for its deli foods. There
is a weekly lunch special and
an early bird dinner special
on weekdays.
For dairy dishes on the
Lower East Side, Ratner's,
which recently became strict-
ly kosher, is famous.
Established in 1905, it calls
itself New York's oldest
family-run restaurant. The
lineups on Sundays can be
long as brunch at Ratner's
seems to be a popular
tradition.
A newly opened Chinese
kosher restaurant in lower
Manhattan is David and
Chin, in the heart of Tribeca.
Mizrachi Kosher Pizza and
Falafel is also located in
Tribeca. All the above are
convenient for those staying
at the Vista International
Hotel, in the financial
district, or visiting Battery
Park and the South Street
Seaport.
For Chinese dining in mid-
town Manhattan there are
Moshe Peking, China
Shalom, Yum Yum Tree and
Hunan New York. The latter
two have opened recently.
Yum Yum Tree is walking
distance from the 92nd St. Y,
the Jewish Museum and the
newly opened Wales Hotel.
This part of the city also has
restaurants serving Italian,
French and Indian cuisine.
Madras Palace specializes
in South Indian vegetarian
dishes. Nanou serves French
Mediterranean cuisine.
Trastevere 84 is an Italian
restaurant. Italian cuisine
also is the specialty at the
cafe/restaurant, My Most
Favorite, on Madison Avenue,
which is walking distance
from the Metropolitan
Museum of Art.
Dairy food in midtown
Manhattan is available at
several branches of the Great
American Health Bar. The
branch at 57th Street and
Sixth Avenue is a short walk
from the New York Hilton.
Kosher dining is also
available at the Hilton, either
as room service or in the
restaurant, with some ad-
vance notice.
Other dairy restaurants in
Manhattan are Greener
Pastures and Pumpkin Eater.
Shalom Kosher Pizza and
Variations are both walking
distance from Macy's.
B-J's Bagels is a bakery,
dairy and vegetarian
restaurant, on Manhattan's
west side, close to Lincoln
Center. Other establishments
near this center for the arts
are Levana Restaurant and
Famous Dairy Restaurant.
Two separate kitchens on
two levels, and a third level
with bar and entertainment,
are featured at David's Harp
Meat and Dairy Restaurant
in the theater district. The
Parc 51 hotel, as well as
numerous theaters, are all
within walking distance.
Middle Eastern dishes are
served at La Kasbah, walking
distance from Lincoln Center.
The restaurant specializes in
Moroccan and Mediterranean
cuisine. There is a patio
garden, and Early Bird din-
ners are available at reduced
prices.
Cafe Shoshana, Mr. Broad-
way and My Place are other
establishments serving
Mediterranean food.
Couscous is featured at the
Galil Restaurant.
Two fast-food places for
meat meals are both located
along Broadway in midtown
Manhattan. They are Kosher
Delight and Empire Kosher
Restaurant.
A new dining experience for
the kosher gourmet can now
be enjoyed aboard the Glatt
Yacht. New York's first kosher
dinner cruise, it features fine
dining with music. The cruise
around Manhattan lasts
three hours and leaves from
Pier 62, on 23rd Street. For
