Crafts Fair

Aish Halbrah/Aleynu will
hold an Arts and Crafts Fair
10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 16 at the
Village Commons Plaza in
downtown Farmington.
The fair will feature 40 ven-
dors selling handmade mer-
chandise. It will also feature
booths for Discovery lbys,
Tupperware, and candy and
nuts. There will be a raffle
every hour starting at 11 a.m.
with prizes from various
vendors.

make people laugh."
But do we need to make
people wince? Klein doesn't
buy the type of comedy cur-
rying favor with so many
young audiences today —
the comedy of hate spewed
out by the likes of Andrew
"Dice" Clay.
"I don't want for a moment
to suggest censorship," he
says, "but the sacrifice that
Lenny Bruce made is being
denigrated by the liberties
taken by people today," such
as Clay, who concentrates on
verbally bashing women,
gays and lesbians.
Such humor is not funny,
says Klein. What it is, is
"mean, tasteless."
"You can't legislate
against such things," says
Klein of those interested in
legally reining in raunch
and rowdy humor. "My only
hope is that it will pass."
Klein is not one to pass by
topics that touch on his
sense of self and identity.
Seven years ago, he was a
key character in The Key, a
documentary about vol-
unteers that was filmed in
Israel and sponsored by
United Jewish Appeal.
"I did it because they
needed me," Klein says of
the work.
But he found some of his
own needs fulfilled in the
process. "My trip," he re-
members, "was a tremen-
dous source of comfort. I felt
a tremendous kinship."
That connection continues.
Discussing today's headlines
about changes in the Soviet
Union, Klein says he can
"only hope that Israel will
be the beneficiary of some of
this glasnost."
The child of the '50s has
given way to a man of the
'90s concerned with the
dilemmas and dynamics of
the new decade. ❑
