FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1990
Dallas (JTA) — Barbara
Schiner of Baltimore recalls
that 32 years ago, her
brother encouraged her hus-
band, Kent, to join a B'nai
B'rith lodge. Since then,
Kent Schiner has held vir-
tually every major leader-
ship post in the worldwide
organization, finally capping
it off by being elected presi-
dent of B'nai B'rith Interna-
tional at the organization's
35th biennial convention
here recently.
Mr. Schiner's top priority,
he said, will be "to infuse
young blood into the organ-
ization, increase member-
ship, improve the quality of
programming, strengthen
public relations programs
and inspire members to
reach greater heights in ser-
vice to BBI."
An insurance underwriter
and financial consultant,
Mr. Schiner served on BBI's
International Board of Gov-
ernors for 15 years and on its
financial management
committee for six years.
Applying some of his
strength in insurance
marketing to the non-profit
field, he sees a need to
package B'nai B'rith like a
product or service, respon-
ding to consumer needs.
Addressing the issue of
women and B'nai B'rith, Mr.
Schiner said he will seek
new ways to work together
on projects and programs
with the independent B'nai
B'rith Women for mutual
benefit, noting at the same
time that females may now
join lodges.
Asked whether he saw any
chance of B'nai B'rith Wo-
men coming back into the
fold under one B'nai B'rith
banner, Mr. Schiner replied:
"Never! There is no chance
of that happening. We will
work closely together and
resolve issues, however."
Recognizing that member-
ship has been moving steadi-
ly downward since 1969, Mr.
Schiner vows to reverse the
trend by responding to the
needs of younger members
and prospective younger
members.
He said he seeks to rid the
organization of its "old
man" image. Presently, half
of the membership is 65
years old or older.
Mr. Schiner recognizes
that younger people have
ideas and interests which
are quite different, and he is
prepared as a "shirt-sleeves"
president to get down to the
individual lodge level to
facilitate changes.
Mr. Schiner will seek to
produce new revenue-
producing programs, such as
expansion of the B'nai B'rith
VISA credit card, which
helps brings income to the
group.
In the hotly fought cam-
paign for president, Mr.
Schiner said his total cam-
paign costs were under
$100;000. His opponent in
the race was Richard
Heideman, a Detroit native
now living in Washington,
D.C.
The son of a manufactur-
ing plant supervisor, Mr.
Schiner had to lie about his
age when he was 16 in order
to join the Marines during
the Korean War.
Barbara, his wife of 33
years, is a ballet and tap-
dance teacher. They have
three children and five
grandchildren.
In other developments at
the convention two weeks
ago, a resolution rejecting
any linkage to the status of
any part of Jerusalem to
that of the administered ter-
ritories was adopted, along
with a resolution supporting
the Bush administration's
action challenging Iraqi dic-
tator Saddam Hussein.

Boycotts Author
Toronto (JTA) — Linda
Spiegel, owner of a chil-
dren's book store in Toronto,
will no longer stock or sell
books by British author
Roald Dahl as a result of his
statement: "I'm certainly
anti-Israel and I've become
anti-Semitic."
In a recent interview with
a British newspaper, Mr.
Dahl claimed the Israel
Defense Force had killed
22,000 Lebanese civilians in
its 1982 bombardment of
Beirut but that "it was very
much hushed-up in the
newspapers because they are
primarily Jewish-owned."
Ms. Spiegel, who owns a
shop called The Lion, The
Witch and The Wardrobe,
said she has written to Mr.
Dahl, asking whether the at-
tributed quotes were accu-
rately reported.
In the event of his failing
to respond, she wrote, "I will
be unable to continue in
good conscience to sell your
books."
No response was received.
Ms. Spiegel estimates her
boycott will cost $3,000 a
year in lost sales.
