want to be your friend. If
you're doing something,
you're going to have
enemies. That's the price
you pay for taking a stand,
for creating institutions."
And create institutions he
does. Recently, the rabbi
received permission from the
Israeli Rabbinate to begin a
program to train female ad-
vocates for Jewish family
court. These women will be
well versed in the religious
laws that pertain to family
cases, and will have the abil-
ity to represent parties in
Bet Din, the religious courts
that rule on civil cases in
Israel.
An entire campus is being
built in Efrat that will even-
tually house Ohr Torah's
boys' high school, the college
program for men, two rab-
binical seminaries, and the
Institute for Jewish Experi-
ence, a soon-to-be completed
retreat center. Students of
collegiate age, families and
adults will be able to par-
ticipate in weekend or ten-
day seminars, intellectually
exploring their Jewish
heritage. A "think-tank"
program is also in the works,
which will attract the in-
tellectual community to
discuss contemporary issues
in a Torah environment.
Rabbi Riskin is hopeful
that the proliferation of edu-
cational institutions will
foster a sense of cooperation
among Jews, and between
Jews and Palestinians. ❑

School Opens
In Ethiopia

Jerusalem (JTA) — A new
Jewish school will be opened
shortly in the Ethiopian
capital of Addis Ababa, the
World Zionist Organization
announced last week.
The school will serve the
thousands of Jews who have
come to the capital from
strife-torn regions in the
north and who are reported
ailing and despondent as
they wait to leave for Israel.
WZO operated Jewish
schools in Ethiopian villages
as early as the 1950s
through its Diaspora Torah
Education Department. But
many of those programs
were ended when thousands
of Ethiopian Jews left the
country in the mass exodus
of the mid-1980s, which
came to be known as Opera-
tion Exodus.
Today, some 3,000 Ethio-
pian youth study in Israel in
programs run by the Youth
Aliyah department of the
WZO.

ched the services of MAGEN DAVID ADOM to its limits.

The current crisis in the Middle East further emphasizes the urgency
for an immediate response.
