Mr. Schwartz, who has run
in two Detroit Free Press
marathons (best showing: 2
hours, 43 minutes, 40th out
of 2,000 runners in 1987) as
well as several others, has
never run 50 miles at one
time. Over the last three
months, he has increased his
training regimen to 110-120
miles a week and recently
ran a 40-mile training run.
"At this point, I'm pretty
confident it (the 50-miler)
shouldn't kill me," he said.
Mr. Schwartz's run will
begin in Birmingham at 6:30
a.m. and follow a route
through Franklin Village,
Farmington Hills, West
Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills
and Pontiac and then down
Woodward and Greenfield to
Providence in Southfield.
As of Monday, pledges to
"Miles For Miracles"
totalled about $23,000, Mr.
Schwartz said. "I want to see
if I can hit $30,000."
"He says he won't be
needing medical help, and
I'm sure he won't," said Dr.
Har-Shai, who will share
driving duties in the van
with Drs. Marcus Collares of
Brazil and Keizo Fukuta of
Japan. Drs. Adrian Lo and
Jay Roff will be in the am-
bulance.
"But he will know if he
needs us we will be there,"
said Dr. Har-Shai. ❑
