At Jewish Camp
Warsaw (JTA) — A
number of young Jews and
Jewish families from
Czechoslovakia, Poland and
the Soviet Union spent a
summer vacation together in
a camp geared to the
celebration of being Jewish.
The camp, a project of the
New York-based Ronald
Lauder Foundation, was
held at an 18th-century
palace at Zaborow, about 15
miles from Warsaw, which
the foundation rented for the
month of July. The families
came from Lvov, in the
Soviet Ukraine, and Vilnius,
Lithuania, both of which had
once been part of Poland.
Nine American youths
selected by the National
Council of Synagogue
Youth, an Orthodox group,
also took part.
The camp included a
kosher kitchen, Hebrew
lessons, lectures on Jewish
topics and daily prayers.
There were also traditional
recreational activities and a
visit to a Jewish cemetery,
where participants tended to
neglected graves.
Kosher food was a novel
experience for most of the
participants, as not a single
Polish or Soviet participant
kept kosher at home.
Jewish
Cemetery
Is Vandalized
Wroclaw, Poland (JTA) —
Anti-Semitic slogans have
been scrawled on the outer
wall of the historic old Jew-
ish cemetery in the southern
Polish city of Wroclaw.
The vandals wrote "Juden
raus" (Jews out) in German,
and "Poland only for Poles"
in Polish. The graffiti also
included spray-painted
drawings of a Jewish star
hanging from a gallows.
The cemetery, founded in
the 19th century and al-
ready out of use before
World War II, is a huge
enclosure of about 12,000
graves. Severely damaged
after the war, it was partial-
ly restored by volunteers
and now is maintained as a
museum under the culture
ministry.
The cemetery contains
many graves riddled with
bullets from the war and in-
cludes numerous artistically
interesting tombstones and
graves, including the tomb
of the mother of Edith Stein,
the Jewish convert to
Catholicism beatified by
Pope John Paul II three
years ago.
