Something for Everyone
ALL YEAR LONG
111
rived from the Bible, quoting
in his first law of Chapter 11
a verse from this week's por-
tion, Nitzavim. He sees
redemption as a historical
promise to the Jews. But the
conditions set forth are that
the Jews must return, physi-
cally and spiritually, to the
land and to the Torah, a com-
plete repentance which shall
bring the individual, and his
seed, to loving God with one's
complete soul.
"And you shall return unto
the Lord your God, and
hearken to His voice accord-
ing to all that I command you
this day. . . And the Lord your
God will open you': heart, and
the heart of your seed, to love
the Lord your God with all
your heart, and with all your
soul . . . And the Lord your
God will make you over-
abundant in all the work of
your hand, in the fruit of your
body, and in the fruit of your
cattle. . . for the Lord will
again rejoice over you for
good, as He rejoiced over your
fathers . ." [Deut. 30:1-9]
Both the verse preceding
this promise, and the verses
following it, deal with the
same theme — that although
heaven is under God's lock
and key, what takes place on
earth is our domain, our
responsibility, and there are
things that Jews have to do
down here — creating a part-
nership with God. We leave
heaven's mysteries to God,
but this world's redemption
depends on us.
Judaism without messian-
ism is a religion without
vision. But the key difference
between normative messian-
ism and extreme messianism
is that the latter believes that
the process is irreversible no
matter what we do — while
the former believes that the
ultimate goal depends on our
actions.
The teaching of the portion
this week is that we all have
a role in bringing the Mes-
anic process to fruition. ❑
