After the war, the new
Communist government of
Hungary had little desire
to talk about the
Holocaust. In Italy, also,
the subject was avoided.
Perlasca never sought
publicity, never wrote a
book, never told the world
what he had done. The peo-
ple he saved never heard
how he was captured by
the Soviets and briefly put
to work cleaning the
streets of rubble and cor-
pses and later was
deported to Istanbul in a
cattle car. How he found
his way back to Italy,
where his former employer
refused him back pay. How
he even was held personal-
ly liable for a car that had
been destroyed when the
Spanish legation was
bombed — and paid for it
with most of what was left
of his own money. "It was
hard" is all he will say of
the last 45 years, during
which he and his wife rais-
ed a son while Perlasca
worked at whatever jobs
he could find.
As indicated, Mr. Perlasca,
humble and unassuming,
never boasted about his
fearlessness that spelled
unusual courage. Mr. Perlasca
returned to Padua under dire
economic stress.
Only a few instances of
humanism are mentioned in
this salute to a very great
man who was a chief rescuer
of Jews from the Nazi tyrrany.
Georgio Perlasca is a name
never to be forgotten. That is
why he must be urgently
nominated for the next
University of Michigan
Wallenberg Medal.

Pat Buchanan's
Anti-Israel Bias

H

aving attained notor-
iety in the "diplo-
matic ranks of
Presidents Nixon and
Reagan, Pat Buchanan con-
tinues to capitalize on it as a
television commentator. In
his leaning upon claims of be-
ing an expert on everything,
especially the Middle East,
his emphases seem always to
be on Israel and nearly
always with bias.
In his latest comments he
charged the Israeli govern-
ment with pressuring the U.S.
to engage in active warfare
against Iraq. Understan-
dably, this has aroused shock
and condemnation, but is
totally unwarranted and ugly.
What he has said is in
character with many of his
anti-Israel views. Will the
ugliness of it ever become
visible on TV? ❑
